THE CAROL OF LIGHT (2003)

In swaddling cloths the Saviour lies

 upon a bed of hay,

His earthly garments, dazzling bright,

 turn darkness into day.

‘Tis Heavenly Light, the Father’s heart,

 poured out in Jesus’ birth!

And lo! we see its glow within

 all creatures here on earth.

O blessed Christmas, day of joy,

 when God Himself comes down,

To show us Eden’s bloom afresh,

 and Heaven’s golden crown.

Angelic voices sing at night,

 and shepherds all afraid

Bestir themselves as darkness flees

 and Glory is displayed.

Let us, like them, make haste to find

 the tiny One within,

The uncreated everlasting

 Light which cancels sin.

O blessed Christmas, day of joy...

From eastern lands long waiting come

 the wise men bearing gold,

Pure Light in earthly metal form

 to greet the King foretold,

Most noble of a kind it is,

 and from all baseness free,

Foreshadowing the purity

 He offers you and me.

O blessed Christmas, day of joy...

As cruel Herod purposes

 to slay the infant one

And quench the supernatural Light

 which burns within the sun,

His earthly father takes him safely

 to a distant land,

As He will bring us all through death

 to Heaven’s shining band.

O blessed Christmas, day of joy...
