THOU LIGHT SUPERNAL, COME (1997)

Like shepherds in the field by night

we wait for break of day,

while shadows grow and in our souls

 the sun seems far away.

The icy winds of winter blow

 within us and without,

and darkness spreads to cover

 all the landscape round about.

By the Father's love begotten,

 Thou Light Supernal, come!

Shine out anew, and let our hearts

 become Thy earthly home.

Hark now, what music do we hear

 in darkness so profound?

What melody is this to which

 the sky and sea resound?

‘Tis angel song, and fearfully

 its beauty we adore:

A melody of joy descends

 with Sunlight evermore.

By the Father's love begotten...

Celestial glory fills the earth,

 and overhead the sky,

where stars beyond all numbering

 send brightness in reply.

And lo! it comes, a star-field there

 above the manger-stall,

where heaven and earth in wonder bow

 before their All-in-All.

By the Father's love begotten...

What say you now, O kings of earth,

 ye wise men from afar?

"O worship Him, for He is come,

and we have seen His star!"

Yes, worship Him, and let His star

 its message true impart;

where shepherds kneel and angels sing

 is deep within your heart.

By the Father's love begotten...

Amen, Amen.
