O SHEPHERDS, SING YE GLORIA (1994)
We hear it told that long ago
in days beyond recall,
Our fathers saw Thee face to face,
and knew Thee All-in-All.
'Tis said they climbed above the clouds
on soaring mountain heights,
And clothed in shining garments there
beheld Thee, Light of Lights.
O shepherds, sing ye gloria,
raise anthems to the skies,
Come quickly, see the place
where God Himself in stillness lies.
But now so late in time we find
no path which leads above,
No voice, no form, no shining sun
reveals Thy face of love.
And here on dark'ning plains we lie,
with eyes that scarcely see,
Our souls shut up like sheep in folds,
no longer seeking Thee.
O shepherds, sing ye gloria...
As ages roll-- how can it be?--
our God Himself comes down.
From mountaintop to manger stall,
He brings His royal Crown.
A secret place within the world
becomes His entry door,
A tiny babe in swaddling cloths,
the One Whom we adore.
O shepherds, sing ye gloria...
Now see we all the golden Child
whose light exceeds the sun,
For whom the stars roll on
and all Creation was begun.
O come, now open wide to Him
the manger of your heart,
That He may welcome find therein,
His Glory to impart.
O shepherds, sing ye gloria...
